Plagerizing OBS Bloggers

© 2009 Albert A Rasch and

.

At first, I thought it was amusing.

As I commented on the Translated by Babel Fish post, I thought it was pretty funny the way my post had come out.

Then I get a note on the comments section from John of Stabley Outdoors that there is another site with more plagiarized materials on it. Huh, really, that's weird...

At first I wasn't too concerned. I copyright with my name, and there are usually a few links on most of my posts. But then I saw a couple of posts that I knew I had read elsewhere. By Googling the title or a phrase I was able to find the original authors and confirm that there is no linking whatsoever back to the original material.

Now I am more than a little perturbed by this. I tend to link to my posts and others pretty frequently, so if you happen to bump into one of my posts on either Bow Hunting Supplies or Duck Hunting Arkansas, you will know it is mine. But they swiped several from Rick at Whitetail Woods, Jeff and Art at Simply Outdoors, Marian at Marian's Hunting Stories. I could go on for quite some time as there are literally dozens of posts that I recognize as something I read somewhere!

It seems to me that whomever owns these blogs, has lifted the Outdoor Bloggers Summit blogroll and plagiarized the majority of us.

Now I am not sure how to proceed, I figure whomever owns these sites is doing it for the CupidFish spif he must be getting. The question is what to do next, how do we put a stop to this?

If everyone will do me a quick favor, link to this post on your own blogs so we can get the maximum number of folks looking at this and maybe someone will have the answer who is outside of our usual circles. Then let me know so I can link to yours too from here.

Colorado Hunting 2 Fishing linked up here.

I think Bore Patch is looking forward to a Show!

Wandering Owl is a real good sort and linked to TROC.

My pal Caleb over in Wisconsin is rightfully upset with Post Steeling.

Kristine over at Outdoor Bloggers Summit will be writing a whole post on the subject next week. I also am going to write another post on this with ways to protect yourself, and at least get some credit for what you have done.

Keep on adding the link and I'll keep on adding y'alls!

Having gone to those two sites you mentioned they seem to be advertising a very rare game with argument mammalian glands for feeding their young. This game is quite dangerous as it saps your wallet and causes all sorts of infections and problems when you get home if you’re married.

Albert,

This sort of thing is common practice. People set up a site to make money using Adwords or with some other sort of advertising and then steal content. Some sites are real aggregators and do give credit and do not screw with the content. Others are just looking for content that will help them place in search engines and draw people to their sites.

It is next to impossible to get these people shut down, and if you do they just pop up somewhere else. I did get one shut down a year or so ago, but I'm sure that person is now doing the same thing on another site, they're just not stealing my stuff.

You can go to the company that hosts the site and check their rules. Most of the hosting companies have rules about sites using content that is not legally their content to use. If you can prove it was stolen, which you can, the host will often shut the site down. That's a pretty long process, however, and there's no guarantee it will stop the spammer entirely.

I'm thinking I may have to do a post on the OBS blog on this subject. I'm guessing you are not the only one who has questions.

Kristine got to it before I could say anything - and she covered it quite well I might add.

This has been going on for quite some time, and I, like Kristine, have attempted to get a few shutdown but it is a pretty lengthy and time-exhausting ordeal most of the time. Honestly, for me anyway, not worth the time and effort that has to go into it to get our content pulled.

Having all of us get together and bringing this topic to the forefront is an excellent idea, though.

And I appreciate you keeping tabs on this stuff, and letting us know our content was swiped.

Looks like both sites you mentioned are clones of one another.

It also looks like there is little if any original content.

Good Luck Albert.

I discovered a new word for this today: "Splog" - a spam blog. Nearly one in five Blogger Blogs are splogs apparantly - or so Wikipedia tells me, anyhow. Still, I guess they're using your 'content' because it's quality stuff. A web savvy reader should be able to find the real source of the the good stuff - your stuff - pretty easily though.

Albert,

I would probably let it lie, it doesn't seem like it's worth the effort to shut them down, unless you can ID the webhost. I looked at it but I couldn't figure it out easily. Maybe Bore Patch might know better.

Cheers,
Mike

Albert, thanks for pointing this out. Sometimes I forget how I can like getting angry. I wrote a post just now expressing my thoughts about these ^%(&^ jerks. I linked to this post.

You do an awesome job keeping up on issues. Hopefully something can be done about this.

Folks,

I'll be writing a post in the next couple of days on what I have found. I think I will have those web sites shut down shortly.

Cupidfish is run by a well know spammer/scammer name Mark Osterholt (aka Wayne Rommel). This weasel has misrepresented himself to potential clients as having done work for us. This same scammer recently used our name to attack a NE outfitter on Twitter. We just had Mark's 12 or so Twitter accounts shut down.

Mark also runs AnglersChat, Myfishingpictures, Hunt101, HuntReport and CupidGoldFish.com. At least those are the rocks we currently find him hiding under, there may be more

Mark was run off Hunt Chat years ago after ripping off the sponsors and advertisers there.

Google the name Mark Osterholt and you can read some history on this POS.

Please boycott Mark and pass the word to any bloggers or outdoor media who may have been ripped off by this cretin.

Albert, I added a blog post about Mark popping back up again. It's time to expose this parasite and shut him down.

Rob Johnson did contract web design work for us under his name Rob Johnson. Payments were made to Rob Johnson. At no time was Mark Osterholt (aka Wayne Rommel) or his company Internet Concepts ever involved with Jesse's Hunting & Outdoors. Mark is a well know con artist so why would we do business with the guy?

To all, you may be able to go after Mark under the DMCA if he has ripped your copyrighted work product. Find a lawyer that is familiar with Internet law and stop him from stealing your hard work and money out of your pocket.

Anonymous said...

Jesse:

So let me get this straight? So if Rob Johnson did work for this guy Mark who is a spammer and such why would you let him work on your site or in your server?

Folks, this is starting to look like a long standing fight between these two.

Also, Jesse I took a peep in your forum and notice you copy stories and links so you get the RSS title relevancy in the SE's. This guy Mark might be stealing content, but you're stealing title key phrases from other bloggers and new organizations feeds.

In short, theft is theft Jesse!

Jesses Hunting And Outdoors said...

All the ripped of blogger posts on the Bowhunting Supplies site have been removed. Mark must be afraid of the big bad DMCA.

The Duck Hunting Arkansas site is still showing feeds from today but it looks like some heavy editing going on to weed out the pics and have a link to the source LOL.

Anonymous, care to come out from behind your facade?

Anonymous said...

Jesse:

I am "Anonymous" because I faxed my CR DMCA report to the host in NY to get my many blog articles pulled. So don't take credit for it. Second, you never answered the question. Do YOU hi-jack news and blog article topics and use them in your forum topics for RSS SE ranking? Why? Because that's also theft.

Hi Albert - I posted on my blog. Hope you can fix the problem.

Albert A Rasch said...

Anonymous,

The fact remains that Mark Olsterholt blatantly stole blog posts from me and a couple hundred other bloggers. He is now blocking my attempts to access his sites, clearly a sign of nefarious activities.

Now you want to go after Jesse's Outdoor and Hunting, go ahead. but do it on your own blog instead of trying to shift focus here. I'm after Osterholt, either join the brawl or stay out of the brawl.

One thing you can do is file DMCA takedown notices with Google here:

http://www.google.com/dmca.html

Many of these ripoff sites make money through Google Ads, and Google takes a dim view of this.
