Saturday Blog Rodeo 02/12/2011
Welcome to the latest installment of the now, not only infamous, but de rigueur for the erudite and in the know crowd of the Chronicles'Saturday Blog Rodeo! As you all are amply aware, I plumb the depth and breadth of the blogosphere searcing for and commenting upon the diverse outdoor activities, (And some indoor ones too!), bringing you, my faithful and ever patient readers more blogs to read and expand not only your minds, but horizons. So with that said let's get into this week's Saturday Blog Rodeo!
First up on the Rodeo is,
The Sharpened Axe. Sawmanship, axemanship, cooking on a fireship, the guy is ship shape! Here is a great bushcraft type blog which has lots of tasty tips on all thing bushcraft. Check out his post Do Haft To? he goes on about his travails with hafting a Hudson Bay Axe. Good fun to be had by all!
Out in Africa:
Next is The African Fly Angler!
The African Fly Angler hails from the beautiful and cosmopolitan city of Cape Town, Western Cape, in South Africa. Cape Town is the second most populous city in South Africa, and originaly settled by the Dutch East Indies Company as a supply station for their ships.
The African Fly Angler started fly fishing about three years ago, and since that time it has almost become an obsession with him. He regularly stalks trout in the beautiful Cape Streams, but also enjoy fishing some still water during the closed season. In addition he also ties flies and sells them to support the habit!
Maine, it's not just an Adventure Destination!
The Maine Outdoorsman: Maine guide and bushwacker, Steve is a great guy to know! Specializing in Turkey, he is also an accomplished predator hunter. He's a part-time writer / photographer and full-time lover of the woods and waters. Steve was first published in the July 2008 issue of The Maine Sportsman Magazine, and since that time has been a regular contributor.
When working 9-5 doesn’t get in his way, he finds time to do a bit of guiding, where he takes great pride in introducing others to the rugged beauty of the Maine wilderness. He's had a series of posts lately that are just a small example of his wit and skill Check them out! Whales go CaCa?, Coyote or Bobcat Track?, and my favorite: We are Going to Die!
The place to saw or be sawn!
The Saw Blog: Woodworking and saws; and I mean this, Matt loves to saw. Matt loves to saw the wood, make the sawdust, and then build stuff with the wood he has sawn. He sweats, gets sore muscles, is occasionally assaulted by rogue pieces of lumber; it's just like any TROC adventure, except he manages it all in his garage ! Look, I know it's not exactly outdoors related, but he uses nothing but hand tools to do his woodworking, a skill that I am intent on and commited to aquiring when I finally get the f%*%$ out of Afghanistan. Check out the massive Super Saw Bench he's built, it's a monster! He's a great guy to boot; if he was into guns, he would be a definite Big Bore shooter!
Sometimes, I'm just a Curmudgeon!
Gorges' Grouse: A grumpy voice in the wilderness! I like Mr Smythe, I really do. We don't agree on some things, but then again who does? What's important is we agree on many of the subjects I hold near and dear like, self-reliance, responsibility, respect for the law, and one of my favorites, a loathing of "multi-tasking." As far as I am concerned, multi-tasking is the ability to screw several things up at once. Just saying. Anyway, stop by and say hello to the gentleman. Just remember to mind your manners and show respect.
What do I know about Finland you ask?
They kicked the Russian's collective butts in the Winter War of 39-40. In five months they fought toe to toe, tooth and nail against the Ruskies, though in the end they lost 11% of their turf to the massive onslaught of Stalin's thugs! Having said that, I've always had a great respect for the people that cold cocked the Russian Bear right across the chops.
With that intro,we introduce a new Blogging Comrade who joins us from Finland! Jaska Jokunen has dropped by and invited us to experience the Land of a Thousand Lakes and his hunting adventures. Not only that but Jaska is a pretty fair cook by the looks of the inumerable dishes he has posted. Check out his well written and wonderfully photographed blog, Terveiset Ravintoketjun Huipulta!
"HOW COME YOU GUYS SIT ON YOUR HELMETS?"
I'm always game for a good turn of phrase and witty commentary. Huey's Gunsight provides all that and more! Huey's just a former Grunt/Pogue living the life as a gun toting 2nd Amendment loving American in the wilds of Ohio. His comments and thought are always fun, sometimes provacative, and worth a visit!
Alright folks, I've got more but I am out of time! This will have to do for this week! See y'all next week!
Best Regards,
Albert A Rasch

The Hunt Continues...
Though he spends most of his time writing and keeping the world safe for democracy, Albert was actually a student of biology. Really. But after a stint as a lab tech performing repetitious and mind-numbing processes that a trained capuchin monkey could do better, he never returned to the field. Rather he became a bartender. As he once said, "Hell, I was feeding mice all sorts of concoctions. At the club I did the same thing; except I got paid a lot better, and the rats where bigger." He has followed the science of QDM for many years, and fancies himself an aficionado. We Finns are always flattered, when someone abroad remembers those 105 wintery days of honour and glory against the crushingly overwhelming Red Army. It wasn’t the first or the last fight against the Russians, though. Every family has lost heroes in these wars, including my grandfather, who died fighting the Soviets. Because of this history, Finland has one of the biggest defence forces in Europe. That’s why almost every man of this small nation goes to the army, as we have mandatory conscription.
ReplyDeleteHunting is a very popular hobby here in Finland. We have the most hunters compared to the whole population than any other European country. And thanks to the Finns who emigrated to America in the 1800’s and the 1900’s, we are the only country on this side of the Atlantic to have the opportunity to hunt white-tailed deer. The original deer were brought to Finland in 1934 and nowadays it’s one of our most important game animals. I happen to live very near to the Laukko manor, where the first deer were brought.
Thanks also for your interest towards my blog! Mostly I hunt to get ethically and quality-wise good ingredients for cooking, not so much to get big trophies. My blog’s name translated to English is “Greetings from the Top of the Food Chain”.
Aha!
ReplyDeleteI knew it was something clever and important. I appreciate your visit and comment which allowed me to find you, here's to many more comments and posts!
I saw your whitetail, and I was wondering how you obtained it, and know I know. Thank you Jaska, for teaching us something new!
Best regards,
