This one got by me somehow, but at least the ending is better than in most cases.

The angler recognized the boat roaring past him in the manatee refuge. It belonged to one of his neighbors in Brevard County. It was going much too fast.
Then the boat slammed into a manatee, a collision so violent that the boat jumped out of the water. The manatee's fluke was still sticking up from behind the motor. The manatee thrashed wildly as blood spread across the rippling waves.
The boat sped away. The angler, horrified, called the authorities to report what his neighbor had done. It turned out this wasn't the first time he had violated the speed rules.

Florida Felons Report: Justice Served!

Several months ago I reported on the case of Larry Joe Colson who had shot and killed a black bear on his Gulf County hunting lease.
"Larry Joe Colson, DOB 4/25/54, of Apalachicola, appeared before Gulf County Judge Fred Whitten last week and pleaded no contest to the misdemeanor charge. He must pay a $1,150 fine; forfeit his .30-06 rifle and scope to the state; serve six months probation and see his hunting and fishing privileges suspended for three years.
His license suspension will apply not only to Florida but also in 26 other states who are members of the Interstate Wildlife Violators Compact.
Colson was charged last January after Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission law enforcement officers found a dead bear on his hunting lease in Gulf County. He later admitted killing the bear.
The leased land is owned by the St. Joe Company. The company has since notified Colson he is banned from hunting on any of their lands for the next five years."
It is always a good thing when justice is served and proper punishment meted out to wrong doers. It is a shame that a grown adult who should have known better committed the crime, but at least he owned up to it and met his obligations.

Florida Felons Report: Killing a Tortoise

Gopher Tortoise (Gopherus polyphemus)
Just about in my own backyard.
"On Saturday, April 4, Theodore Cuyler Jr., (DOB 02/13/67) of 6707 Carovel Ave., North Port, loaded "Speedy," as the Gopher Tortoise was locally known, into his van - over the loud objections of residents on Calera Street."
The sorry piece of human refuse, thought he could get away with stealing and killing an endangered tortoise, but he didn't count on the determined and combined efforts of Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) Officer Bob O'Horo and North Port police officers Shawn Rice and Mike Laden.
"Wading through the maggot-filled trash, officers found gopher tortoise parts, consisting of skin, feet and claws, which indicated that at least one gopher tortoise had been dismembered."
They proceeded to arrest Cuyler and the case is now in the hands of the state courts.
"Gopher tortoises are considered a keystone species, because their deep burrows are important to the survival of more than 130 other species that call Southwest Florida home. Gopher tortoises are listed by the state as a threatened species. Intentionally killing a threatened species is punishable as a third-degree felony, with a fine of up to $5,000 and/or five years in prison."

Florida Felons File: Shooting Decoys

I don't know... It seems that all the numbskulls have come to Florida lately.
This guy must be a real charmer.

BAY COUNTY -- Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers watched as a truck stopped near a deer decoy and a 13-year-old girl took two shots at it, according to FWC's weekly report.
The girl was being coached on how to properly kill the deer by her mother's boyfriend, who is a convicted felon.
The mother was driving the car and illuminating the deer for her daughter and boyfriend.
They were cited for night hunting and road hunting.
I don't know who is more guilty here. The felon, for doing what he did, or the mother, for associating with a felon and allowing her daughter to commit a misdemeanor!
I hope they throw the book at the lot of them. Remember it is your wildlife as much as anyone else's! Report all poaching! It is thoughtless people like these criminals that give all sportsmen a black eye! In Florida you can call 1-888-404-3922 You may be eligible for a reward up to $1000.00!

Felon Coaches 13-year-old Girl to Shoot Decoy
