Yo-Yo's for Troops:USO Give-Away!

First I want to apologize for taking so long to post this! But I temporarily have a means to upload photos and post them!

So I filled a beat up, off-green shopping basket that AAFEES kindly loaned me with the Yo-Yo's everyone sent me. You wouldn't believe how heavy it was; there were over 200 yo-yo's in that basket! It was late on a Friday night, so I knew there would be a good sized crowd at the newly built USO.

The transient tent compound is next door, so a lot of the fellows on their way to or from the field are put up there for a night or two. Many of them stop in at the USO for a little respite from the daily rigors of military life. You can always spot the guys that are fresh in from the field. They are usually the ones sound asleep on the recliners or couches.

I signed in and went to work passing out and sharing everything that you have sent our brave men and women over the last few months.

A lot of the guys immediately started playing with them, while others shoved them in their pockets for later inspection and entertainment.

We talked about all sorts of stuff - home, wives and girlfriends, sons and daughters, our pets, goals, and aspirations.

I spent a good couple of hours there shaking hands and talking to folks from all over the United States. They're doing good work my friends, let's not forget them!

Yo-Yo's for Troops: The Big Give Away!

Finally!

After weeks of diligent work, almost daily rocket attacks, and assorted and sundry trials and tribulations, we are excited and ready to give some of your Yo-Yo's away to the Troops!

The USO on Kandahar Airfield has kindly allowed us to take our not insubstantial number of yo-yo's and distribute them to the hard fighting fellows taking a well deserved break there. We have scheduled two Sundays, a month apart, as I still receive at least a box a week with Yo-Yos and assorted sundries for the troops.

It's not commonly known, but many commanders (McChrystal ahem...) feel that 2 or 3 days in Bagram Airfield or Kandahar Airfield is a wonderful and sufficient respite from being shot at, rocketed, or blown up, out in the field. Of course they (McCrystal...Ahem!) closed many of the overpriced emporiums on the bases that the soldiers flocked to. The commanders (McCrystal...Ahem!) felt that the soldiers would get soft from two or three days of living the high life in the cosmopolitan and notoriously decadent Airfields.

Imagine the merriment when the USO finally opened up on KAF almost three weeks ago! (After what... almost nine years? I mean seriously, we slammed the Taliban here on Dec 7 2001...)

But I digress. The USO is a beautifully executed space, built inside of a huge clamshell tent. They spared no expense in making it comfortable and useful to the troops. Phone banks, reading areas, video gaming area, cushions, chairs, couches, you name it! Even a coffee room where you can brew your own.

As you already know, Uncle Roy (He is real!) of Uncle Roy's Toys has donated 200 hundred hand crafted hardwood yo-yo's for us to distribute. And dozens of people have sent yo-yo's that bring the total to over three hundred! That's a lot of Yo-Yo's for Troops!

One of the NCOs that I work with has graciously volunteered to assist with the distribution.

I have secured some help with the photos we will be taking, and I hope to have them up and on line within a couple of days of giving them out.

Again, I want to thank everyone that has been able to donate Yo-Yo's and other stuff for the troops. Wait until you see the pictures, and then you'll get an idea of how important this is to the fellows!

Morale Boosting Yo-Yo's!

I'm still receiving care packages with morale boosting Yo-Yo's from my friends and patriots throughout the blogosphere!

I want to thank DesertFoxPatriot for his kind gift of Yo-Yo's. Not only did he forward Yo-Yo's for me to share with our troops, he also enclosed small notes with fantastic quotes from our Founding Fathers! What a nice and personal touch that is!

And in a few days, as time permits, I will finish an interview with Uncle Roy's Toys' very own Uncle Roy, who has graciously donated 200 handmade, hardwood Yo-Yo's to the campaign! These are all-American, Made in the USA Yo-Yo's for our fighting men!

I am currently coordinating with Stars and Stripes and it is my hope that they will help out and cover our distribution of Yo-Yo Care Packages!

With some luck, I will finally have a wireless connection to the internet in a couple of weeks. That will allow me to download photos and post them. You can look forward to a whole bunch of photos from the ones I have already given away, and more!

Dust, Dust, and More Dust! Notes from Afghanistan!

Howdy everyone!

I'll be leaving the Eastern provinces in a couple of days, and I wanted to let you all know what is coming up!

First, the Yo-Yo's for Troops campaign is really cranking up! Ms Pierceall found out about the YYfT morale program through Home on the Range and generously donated Yo-Yo's. The Silicon Greybeard made a very generous donation of Yo-Yo's too! But wait until you hear what is coming up soon. I am so excited that I can barely contain myself. A former Marine, veteran of the Korean Conflict, and accomplished woodcrafter, has hand turned and assembled 200 custom Yo-Yo's for the cause!!! I can't wait for them to arrive, and I hope that I can get Stars and Stripes to write a piece on our benefactor! Of course I have already written one, and as soon as I get them, I am heading right out to pass them out, get pictures, and post them!  So stay tuned!

As many of you know, I have the privilege of sharing with you articles and pictures from Sporting Classics!  I was really surprised and very pleased to be chosen; Sporting Classics is the one magazine all the other outdoor magazines are judged by.  Right now I am publishing them on Friday, but I would like some input on which day you would like to see them on. It will be a weekly column, one that I hope will be a big hit with you.

Hunting season is just about upon us, and I'll be having quite a few articles that will concentrate on it. I'm also wracking my brains for ideas, how-tos, projects, preparation, and the like, and I would like some ideas from you if possible! Anything for the cause! Oh, and remember that National Hunting and Fishing Day will soon be upon us! So plan now to do what you can to perpetuate our National Heritage.

News from the Front: I'll be heading out for R&R soon, so I'll be able to catch up on quite a few posts and pictures that I have been wanting to share with you. I'll be buying a new laptop, and it will have one of those wireless things in it so that I can actually get on the internet sans the MilNet filters. If I have the wherewithal, a new SLR will be coming back with me too. There is actually quite a bit of wildlife here that I would like to capture on pixels and show you.

All in all, it's quite an adventure I'm having. I look forward to going home for a couple of weeks, seeing my loved ones, and stopping by my local Starbucks, where everyone knows my name. Bubby has a secret Largemouth Bass spot that he's been staying away from, so that, in his own words, "They don't get lockjaw." He really wants me to get into a nice Largemouth!

Best regards, your friend,
Albert "Why is there so much dust in this place?" Rasch

The History of Yo-Yos

The History of Yo-Yo-s,...or at least a guide!

First, I want to thank all the folks that helped get the Yo-Yo's for Troops project off to a good start. Fellows that have heard of the YYfT campaign are anxiously awaiting Yo-Yo's in their care packages, and I have been busy doing a little research on the history of Yo-Yos.

The National Yo-Yo Museum is located in Northern California, in the historic downtown of Chico. The museum boasts the world's largest public display of yo-yo's and contest history. The museum is open year round, and admission is free! There are regular tours every day.

The History of the Yo-Yo page at the National Yo-Yo Museum is simply fascinating! Little did I know that the use of Yo-Yos to pass the time when at war was not without precedence. On the morning of June 18, 1815, just before the Battle of Waterloo, Napoleon Bonaparte himself and his army were seen taking their leisure with their "joujou de Normandie." By the way, that may be where the term Yo-Yo may have come from.

The reference is only a page long, but there are a whole bunch of interesting bits of Yo-Yo facts and trivia with which you may dazzle and mystify your friends, neighbors, and relatives!

Not to be outdone, Duncan Yo-Yo has a timeline of the Yo-Yo. It covers five distinct periods in the history of mankind and how Yo-Yos have evolved along with society.

As archeology has borne out, the yo-yo as we know it has been traced back to 500BC and the Greeks. Can anyone tell me if there is anything we don't owe to the ancient Greeks? Someone found a platter with a depiction of a boy using a yo-yo, and terra cota yo-yo discs have been unearthed, many with mythological creatures depicted on them.

There have been several personages that have used the Yo-Yo at different times. Lafayette, President Nixon, and Abbie Hoffman, all have used the Yo-Yo for a variety of entertainment and political reasons.

It's interesting to note that while the vast majority of comments coming in are positive and encouraging, there have been a couple that were... how shall I put it? Less than enthusiastic. One was from a person in the United States, while the other was from Europe. Both thought that it was a terrible waste of time and resources. I forward them the links to the History of the Yo-Yo, and added my own perspective on why a child's toy would be a welcome distraction. In the end, neither disagreed with the idea and though they didn't volunteer to send a Yo-Yo, I still have hopes!

Now we have a new Banner Flyer! Mike S of Mike's Travels and Travails is flying the Yo-Yo's for Troops banner, and I can't thank him enough. Mike is a great linker, and links to a myriad of outdoor posts, many of them from our very own OBS group.

Brigid has written, what else, another "Best of:  Home on the Range" piece on the Yo-Yo's for Troops. I am always amazed by her writing ability, and if you go up to my "This is How We Roll" page you'll see her in several catagories, including the "Women I Would Like to Meet"catagory and "Real Writers." Brigid has a way of drawing you in with oatmeal raisin cookies, toy soldiers, or snow flakes, and then taking you on a stroll through memory lane. Her command of the nuances of the English language and her prose leave me always wanting more, and embarrased by my meager abilities. Brigid too is flying the banner!

And not to be outdone, Kari, my favorite bear hunting lady, is also flying the banner on her hunting and outdoor (mis)adventure blog I Don't Wear Pink Camo to the Woods. I can't thank her enough for taking the time to help bring some cheer to the fellows out her!

Marian dropped me a note yesterday and said, "I think it is a marvelous idea you have and I know it will keep their minds off of everything thats going on over there and have a little fun." Not only that, but she has offered to blog about the Yo-Yo's for Troops, and fly the banner on her blog, Marian's Hunting Stories!

Again I would like to thank all the folks that have promised to send yo-yo's, and I assure you that there will be plenty of pictures as they start to arrive!

The Rasch Outdoor Chronicles

Though he spends most of his time writing and keeping the world safe for democracy, Albert was actually a student of biology. Really. But after a stint as a lab tech performing repetitious and mind-numbing processes that a trained capuchin monkey could do better, he never returned to the field. Rather he became a bartender. As he once said, "Hell, I was feeding mice all sorts of concoctions. At the club I did the same thing; except I got paid a lot better, and the rats where bigger." He has followed the science of QDM for many years, and fancies himself an aficionado. Yo-Yos for Troops!

Ok, I know what your thinking...

"What the devil are you up to Albert? Yo-Yos???"

As it turns out, that's exactly what I am thinking. Yo-Yo's.

I was just walking down the side of the camp road when I spyed something green in the dirt. After a couple of hard learned lessons, you tend to stop and carefully canvas the surrounding area for anything else out of place. After a pretty thourough investigation I came to the conclusion that it was safe to investigate more closely. I had happened upon a broken Duncan Butterfly yo-yo. The side was off, and the axle was loose. As it so happens, I travel prepared. I brought some gel crazy glue with me, along with assorted a sundry other items that make your life tolerable in Afghanistan. (See my post: What You Need to Bring Overseas as a Contractor.)  A few minutes later I had a perfectly serviceable yo-yo again.

I remember that sometime around 1970-71 there was a Yo-Yo craze; at least there was in my neighborhood!  We all had to have Yo-Yos and many of us learned tricks like "walk the dog," "around the world," and "rock the cradle."

So, I was outside the tent in our compound, Yo-Yoing away the afternoon. Boy what fun it is to have something to do while the interminable hours drift by.

A couple of the other fellows whose brains had yet to be baked in their skulls stopped by, so I offered the Yo-Yo to each in turn so they could have some fun with it. We must have spent a couple of hours out there, getting the hang of it, laughing, telling tall tales, and forgetting we were hot, dirty, and far from home.

As a parent, you know the tell tale signs of boredom, frustration, anger, and fear in your children. I see it in our young military folks all too often. I can't tell you how many of these kids I have seen that are dangerously close to the breaking point. All they need is something to distract them from their daily drudgery.

Therein lies my idea.

I would like for you to forward a Yo-Yo or two to me, so that I may distribute them to the young men and women that are out here sucking up dust and dodging bullets. If you have never sent anything to a deployed service member before, let me tell you that it is a one of their greatest pleasures to receive a gift from the states from someone they don't know. It just makes their day!

I hope many of you will be inclined to take a moment out of your day and box one up. I'll let you know who received it and take a picture or two and post it on TROC. Make sure you put a slip of paper inside with your name and email so I can let you know it has arrived, and so the service member can thank you too! It's a little thing, a Yo-Yo is, but it can mean the world sometimes.

My address changes regularly! Please email me for my current one!:

One more thing if you don't mind. I want to ask all of my fellow bloggers to please link to this post, or even better, email me and I will send you the html of this post for a guest post on your blog! I sure would appreciate it!

I want to thank you in advance for giving this some thought. And for those of you that will forward a YoYo, I can't thank you enough for the kindness you are exhibiting. Believe you me, you will make a service member's day!

Rick Kratzke of Whitetail Woods has graciously published this post on his blog! Not only that, but he has offered to send a Yo-Yo to the troops! And will now be flying the banner too! Well done my friend! Guest Post from Afghanistan

Troutrageous! has also committed to forwarding a YoYo, and check out what he has done on the right side of his blog! He has created a banner! And he posted too: YoYos: They're not Just for Kids Anymore! He is another true supporter of our troops!!!

Okie Redneck is going to help out too! She's going to fly the banner, and allow me the privilege of guest posting on her blog! Now there is a great troop supporter! PS: I love the header on your blog!

Hippo on the Lawn's own literary ExPat has emailed me from Angola! If I may quote him: "When I first read your post I was beginning to think you'd gone stir crazy but then I remembered when I was doing bomb disposal tours and being on call all the time. It really was, as they say, long periods of boredom interspersed with short periods of real fear. Anything we received that helped take our minds off the job and pass the time was gratefully received." Even in Angola, our friends are going to help us out! Thanks Tom! The links are on their way. His hilarious post on the matter is here!

KC of  DiaperBagWrangler.com is going to do her part to help support the troops! She will be forwarding a Yo-Yo too! Huh... will you look at that... She's got a blog too! DiaperBagWrangler.Blogspot Boy have I got a lot to learn about stuff still... Thank You Ma'am!

Deer Passion in Kansas is going to send some Yo-Yos too! Her post, Yo-Yos for the Troops, is lovely, and she is flying the banner too! She says,"...finding a broken yo-yo, he is on a mission to bring smiles, a little bit of hope and alot of fun to our men and women serving overseas." On a mission, I like that!

I Don't Wear Pink Camo to the Woods is Kari's blog on all things outdoors in Wisconsin. She bumped into Ricks post on YoYos for the Troops and is sending some my way to distribute. BTW if you're interested in bear hunting, Kari's your gal!

Another Falconry Blog has been very kind to blog about the Campaign, and has posted and linked to the YoYos for Troops! The momentum is building!

Big Mike S is flying the banner! He is also a huge fan of linking to posts so stop and see what he finds most interesting on the net!

Please email me if you would be willing to place the banner that Mike Troutrageous! has so graciously designed for the Yo-Yos for the Troops campaign. I would be very appreciative of all of you that would do so. TheRaschOutdoorChronicles(at)msn(dot)com
